December was a busy month for me, but I guess it’s busy for everyone. I managed 2 short stories and 2 books, one a fluff piece. Started a new job in December, so not as much time for audiobooks, which means I’ll be making up those numbers somehow in 2019.
The Cats of Ulthar – H.P. Lovecraft
Only the second thing I’ve ever read by Lovecraft, and I liked it much better than At The Mountains of Madness. This one’s about cats. Specifically, a town where killing cats is illegal. It’s the story of why killing cats is illegal.
Super quick read, and an interesting one. I liked the twist in it.
Again, the second thing I’ve read by this author. The first was Slaughterhouse Five, and I still am not sure what to think of that one. This one’s a science fiction dystopia, where population is capped. To have a child, someone must die. Those who will willingly go dial 2BR02B.
Interesting story, not a long read. Didn’t quite go in the direction I thought it would. Kind of a mindfuck.
Brave New Girl – Rachel Vincent
Dahlia 16 is one of 5000 clones, destined to become a gardener and provide food for her city. She follows the rules, stays with her clones, and doesn’t want anything out of the ordinary. Then she gets stuck in an elevator with Trigger 17, and it all changes. Suddenly she’s the one breaking the rules.
This one was meh. I want to know what happens, since it ended on a crappy cliffhanger, but I’m waiting for it from the library. I love dystopia books, but I am not wild about the “chosen one is chosen by no other reason than being there.” This one had a reason, which was better than most. Still, the insta love/lust/interest wasn’t very interesting.
Cute fluff book about a guy who works in Mergers and Acquisitions approaching burnout. He rents a charter on a yacht, but his sailing partner cancels on him last minute, so it’s him and Foster, the captain of the yacht. Sparks fly, they have fun, and live happily ever after. Oh, there’s a storm and bad oysters.
Cute and fun, easy read when I was trying to unwind after my new job. Not a lot of stress or angst or plot to it, and sometimes that’s all you need.
Man, I’m short on words this week. Maybe it’s because I feel like hammered crap.
